Steven D. Whitaker, 57, of Tell City, passed away late Wednesday, November 21, 2007 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee.

Steve was born on April 30, 1950 in Crawfordsville, Indiana, son of the late Robert S. Whitaker and Thelma Morgan Whitaker. Steve was a 1968 graduate of Lafayette Jefferson High School in Lafayette, Indiana. He was a 1972 graduate of Indiana State University with a bachelor's degree in Marketing and Distributive Education. He later earned his Master's degree in education at Indiana University. He was united in marriage in Tell City on July 29, 1978 to the former Stephanie Kraus, who survives. Steve became a teacher in the Tell City-Troy Township School Corporation in 1975 where he remained for over thirty years until his retirement in 2005. He taught several classes while serving as assistant football coach. He later became head football coach for four years and also served as head coach for girl's basketball and coached girl's softball for many years. Steve was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, Hoosier Heights Country Club and St. Paul Catholic Church. He enjoyed golf, reading, gardening, bird hunting and playing his guitar. Steve was a Jimmy Buffett fan and looked forward to trips to Key West to go deep sea fishing.

Steve is survived by his wife of 29 years, Stephanie Kraus Whitaker

One daughter, Morgan Whitaker, a student at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana

Two sisters, Debbie Moore, North Richland Hills, Texas

Sue Whitaker, Lafayette, Indiana

His father and mother-in-law, Louie and Suzanne Kraus, Tell City, Indiana

One brother-in-law, Greg Kraus and his wife, Barbara , Terre Haute, Indiana

Two sisters-in-law, Gretchen Durbin and her husband, Daniel, Louisville, Kentucky

Dr. Sarah Roberts and her husband, Philip, Alpharetta, Georgia

Several nieces and nephews

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM CST Monday, November 26, 2007 at St. Paul Catholic Church in Tell City, with Rev. Barnabas Gillespie O.S.B. officiating. Visitation is from 2:00 - 7:00 PM Sunday and 8:00 - 10:30 AM Monday at Huber Funeral Home, 1139 12th Street, Tell City, Indiana where a parish prayer service will he held at 6:30 PM Sunday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Tell City High School Athletic Fund or the Kidney Cancer Association.
