Cannelton, Indiana -

Michael F. Rutherford, 83, passed away at 12:30 PM Wednesday at the home of his sister in Cannelton.

Michael was born April 28, 1926 in Detroit, Michigan, son of the late Michael J. Rutherford and Frances C. (Busam) Rutherford. He was also preceded in death in 2005 by his wife of fifty-two years, Pauline (Groves) Rutherford, two brothers, Harold "Shanty" and Stephen Rutherford.

When Michael was two years old, the family returned to their native Cannelton. He attended St. Michael Elementary School and was a 1945 graduate of Cannelton High School. In 1949, he received a bachelor's degree of music from the Arthur Jordan Conservatory of Music in Indianapolis. An accomplished violinist, he received his master of music degree from Indiana University in 1962.

Michael was drafted into the United States Army shortly after WW II. After returning from service, he began teaching at Memorial High School in Evansville. He then became a music teacher and choir director for the Tell City-Troy Township School Corporation, working at Hoosier Heights Elementary School until his retirement in 1978.

After his retirement, Michael developed an interest in genealogy. This interest in history led him to become a respected historian in Perry County, publishing a church history book, St. Michael's on the Hill in 1986 and a county history book, Perry County: Then and Now, in 2000.

A lifelong musician, Michael had performed with the Hoosier Corn Huskers for dances and on the radio. He later directed the Tell City Barbershoppers.

Michael was a member of the Tell City Historical Society where he was named Distinguished Citizen of the Year in 1998. He was also a member of Historic Cannelton, Knights of Columbus Council #1172, American Legion Post #213 and the Indiana Retired Teachers Association. A lifelong member of St. Michael Catholic Church, Michael had served the church for many years as choir director and cantor.
