Elizabeth Rose “Betty” James, 80, passed away on August 20, 2026, at her home, surrounded by her family.
She was born in Tell City, Indiana on May 26, 1946, daughter of Gabriel and Dortha (Findley) Miller.
Betty was a 1964 graduate of Tell City High School and attended Evansville School of Nursing. On October 12, 1968, Betty was united in marriage to Joseph “Nolan” James at St. Paul Catholic Church. They shared 57 years together until Nolan’s recent passing on July 29, 2026, reassuring us that she didn’t want to live apart from her husband.
Betty spent several years at home, taking care of and raising her family. Once they were all old enough, she went to work at Scenic Hills Nursing Home in Ferdinand, where she then cared for others as an LPN for more than 20 years before retiring.
Betty again settled into her homemaker role where she enjoyed gardening and canning. She liked to read, especially true crime stories, crotchet and spoiling her cat, Tippy. She looked forward to visits with her grandchildren and family gatherings. She was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church.
She is survived by her children, Chris James (Trina), Diane Sturgeon (Brian), Anita Borden (Patrick) and Brian James (Caryn); son-n-law, Mike Mullen; her siblings, Jane Heeke (Pat), Cathy Frizell (Gary), Jim Miller (Kathy), Charlie Miller (Maria), Lisa Newton (Mark) and Bruce Miller; grandchildren, Trevor and Tristan James, Brooke Ingram (Cory), Wyatt Sturgeon (Audrey), Bre Sturgeon (Bryce Cross), Taylor Brinckman (Ryan), Paige Cross (Zach), Reese Borden (Kaelyn Luker), Ella Borden and Emily Sprinkle; great grandchildren, Grant and Warner Ingram, Cecilia Sturgeon and Diane, Cason and Rowan Cross.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Gabriel and Dortha Miller; husband, Nolan James; daughter, Dawn Mullen; brothers, Darrell Lee and David Miller and sisters-in-law, Jeanette Miller and Sharon Miller.
Betty requested no visitation or funeral services. Huber Funeral Home is assisting her family with arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to Old Chapel Cemetery.
