Hargis “Red” Anderson, 95, passed away at his home on February 15, 2025, where he was surrounded by family. 

He was born in Cannelton on May 23, 1929, the son of Teddy A. and Pearl (Persinger) Anderson. He graduated in 1947 from Cannelton High School and had an associate’s degree in business. Hargis served his country in the United States Army (Unit 135 U.S. Army Band) and was a 60-year member of Harry G. Myers American Legion Post #142. 

 Hargis married Hilda Richardson on June 9, 1951, at Evangelical United Church of Christ in Tell City. “Red Anderson” was a well-known and respected door-to-door insurance agent. He retired in 1988 after 30 years with Prudential Insurance. At one time, he had also been a shipping clerk with Midwest Safe Company. 

“Red” loved his community, church and was always civic minded. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and had been a Cannelton city councilman, an at-large councilman, and former member of Cannelton Jaycees, Cannelton Kiwanis, Cannelton School Board, Cannelton Utility Board and Odd Fellows Lodge. 

He enjoyed playing music in local bands: The Catfish Band, High-Hatters and Dixie Davis Band. He never turned down an opportunity to go to a casino and loved to travel and spend time with his family. 

Surviving him are his children, Brenda Lawalin and Mike Anderson; grandchildren, Brian Lawalin (Marion), Nathan Lawalin (Jamie), Matthew Anderson and Michelle Anderson; great-grandchildren, Cody Lawalin (Sarah), Taylor Fischer (Ross), Haylee James (Chase), Emalee Lawalin, Terissa Cravens (Caleb) and Makenzy Roark (Shane); great-great grandchildren, Ivy Jean and Hudson Lawalin and Cash and Charlie Cravens and several nieces and nephews. 

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at Huber Funeral Home, Cannelton Chapel, with burial in New Cliff Cemetery where there will be military graveside rites. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until service time. 

Memorial contributions may be made to Harry G. Myers American Legion Post #142 or First United Methodist Church, both in Cannelton.
