Harold M. Mathena, 96, passed away August 21, 2024, at his home, surrounded by his family.
He was born in Cannelton on February 5, 1928, to Solman and Rosie (Thompson) Mathena.
Harold was a Korean War Army veteran. He was a lifetime member of V.F.W Post #2939 and a 56-year member of Harry G. Myers American Legion Post #142.
He retired in 1988, after 31 years of service with Whirlpool. During his retirement, Harold enjoyed fishing, working in his garden, watching IU basketball and St. Louis Cardinals baseball. He was an avid reader and liked to solve puzzles.
Survivors include his son, Dennis Mathena (Amy), Newburgh; stepdaughters, Carolyn Evrard- Adams (Larry) and Martha Lehmkuhler (Bill), both of Tell City; daughter in law, Gladys Mathena, Giddings, TX; niece, Joyce Stillwell, Sebree, KY; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his first wife, Mary Alice (McAdams) Mathena; second wife, Shirley (Pyle) Evrard Mathena; son, Harold “Hal” Mathena; stepsons, Fred Evrard and Allen Evrard; and a sister, Gladys Gilbert.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM CDT on Thursday, August 29, 2024, at St. Michael Catholic Church in Cannelton. Rev. Stephen Donahue will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery with military rites.
Visitation will be Thursday from 8:30 until 10:30 AM at Huber Funeral Home, Tell City Chapel.
