Tell City, Indiana -
Jerry E. Merritt, 86, passed away on March 31, 2024 at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh.
He was born in Eureka, Indiana on July 5, 1937, son of Leonard and Sadie (Ruark) Merritt.
A U.S. Army veteran, Jerry retired from National Southwire Aluminum after 30 years. He loved spending time in nature, often feeding the animals by hand that would visit his yard. Jerry enjoyed reading Louis La’Mour westerns, shooting pool, playing euchre, woodworking, fishing, golfing and visiting the Smokey Mountains with his family and watching the antics of his cats, Bob and Lucky.
Surviving is his wife of 58 years, Darlene Merritt; children, Roberta “Bobbie” Sabelhaus, Theresa Galey (Curtis), Tamera Merritt (Mark Brinksneader) and Misty Merritt-Bolin (Tracy); son-in-law, Chris Merritt and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; children, Toby Merritt, Wyman Therber and Shannon Merritt; grandsons, Fred Merritt and Francis Sabelhaus; brother, Bill Merritt; sisters, Laura Katherine Campbell and Dorothy Jean McKeethen and son-in-law, Pat McKinney.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM CDT on Wednesday, April 3, 2024 at Huber Funeral Home, Tell City Chapel. Earl Wayne Miller will officiate. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery with military rites.
Visitation will be on Wednesday from 10:00AM-2:00 PM at the funeral home.
