Joe Howland

Tell City, Indiana Joseph O. "Joe" Howland, 80, passed away October 24, 2019 at U of L Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. He was born in Spencer County, Indiana on January 17, 1939, son of the late Walter and Lucille (Bender) Howland. Also preceding him in death was a sister, Wanda Shephard and nephew, Wade Bauer. Joe was a 1958 graduate of Cannelton High School and served in the National Guard. He was united in marriage to Betty Schipp on August 1, 1964 at St. Paul Catholic Church, where they were members. Joe worked construction his entire life, retiring in 2001 from the Carpenters Local Union and had also worked for Malone Brothers for several years. After retirement, Joe stayed busy as a volunteer for Perry County Habitat for Humanity where he involved himself in the planning and building of several Habitat homes. An avid coin collector, he was a member of the Tell City, Jasper and Owensboro Coin Clubs. Joe enjoyed bowling and coached his sons in Little League and Babe Ruth and continued coaching baseball for many years after. A Cincinnati Reds fan, the entire family attended a game in June to celebrate Joe's 80th birthday. Despite the Reds loss, they created great family memories! Joe enjoyed camping, playing wizard and euchre and spending time with his family and all his grandchildren. Surviving is his wife of 55 years, Betty Howland, Tell City; his children, Debbie Howland Moskos, Ft. Branch, Connie Haehnel (Darren), West Lafayette, Ed Howland (Laura), South Barrington, IL and Gary Howland (Brandie), Elberfeld; a brother, Walter "Junior" Howland, Tell City; grandchildren, Trevor Moskos (Alyssa), Kylie and Tannor Moskos, Steven and Lindsey Haehnel, Eric Munsie, Benjamin and Allison Howland, Ryker Howland and three great grandchildren, Gracelyn, Robert and Carlie. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM CDT Tuesday, October 29, 2019 at St. Paul Catholic Church. Rev. Tony Hollowell will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 2:00-7:00 PM and Tuesday 8:30-9:30 AM at Huber Funeral Home, Tell City. Memorial contributions may be to Perry County Habitat for Humanity or St. Paul Catholic Church.
