John E. "Big John" Vandgrift, 75, passed away on December 6, 2022 at Oakwood Health Campus, surrounded by his family and friends. He was born in Dukes, Kentucky on February 20, 1947 to Burton and Bessie (Johnson) Vandgrift. "Big John" retired from the Perry County Highway Department, where he was a truck driver for more than 27 years. He enjoyed auctions, taking drives, listening to "old" country music, mushroom hunting, his dogs and visiting with friends and family. He is survived by his son, Danny R. Vandgrift and wife, Kristie "Krissy' of English; sisters, Mildred Whitehead and Juanita Umphries, Elberfeld, Hazel Finley, Terre Haute, Linda Bryant (Don), Rome, Judy Patterson, Cloverport, KY, Arlene McMahon, Cannelton, Barbara Zoerner, Marshfield, WI, brother, Herman Vandgrift, Waldo, Fl and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Preceding him in death were his parents; a son in infancy, Gary Lynn Vandgrift; his companion of 20 years, Patsy Duke and brothers, Curtis Vandgrift and Earl Vandgrift. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM CST on Saturday, December 10, 2022 at Huber Funeral Home, Tell City Chapel. Brother Adam Stroud will officiate. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 3:00-7:00 PM and Saturday 9:00 AM until service time at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Perry County Humane Society. Huber Funeral Home is both honored and privileged to be entrusted with the care of Mr. Vangrift.
