James “Mark” Newlin, 68, passed away on June 25, 2025, at his home.
He was born in Bloomington on July 16, 1956, the son of James and Shirley Ann (Crane) Newlin. Mark graduated from high school in Bloomington and had a bachelor’s degree in education from Indiana University. He served his country in the U.S. Marine Corp.
Coaching high school football was Mark’s passion; he lived it, breathed it and read about it daily. He was a well-respected football coach in the state of Indiana, having coached at DeKalb, Elmhurst, Fort Wayne, Tell City and Bloomington high schools and Brebeuf Jesuit Prep School.
In 1986, Mark was the offensive coordinator when DeKalb High School won a state championship. From 1992-1995, he coached for the Fort Wayne Generals where he was fondly known as “General Newlin”. He took their team to the Hoosier Dome twice, once in 1992 where they finished their season as state runner up and again in 1995 where they won the class 4-A state championship.
Mark kept up with world news and was very conservative in thought and opinions. When he was watching the news, usually his best friend, Riley (his beloved golden retriever) was alongside him. He continued his love of I.U. football throughout his life.
His family includes his wife of 39 years, Penny Newlin; children, Tyrel Newlin and Megan James (Darrin); granddaughters Emery and Audyn James and a brother, Scott Newlin.
Mark’s parents, James Newlin, Shirley Ann Jackson and a brother, Jace Newlin preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be private at Huber Funeral Home, Tell City, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Tell City’s Sports Complex or Tell City Football.
