Nancy Carolyn (Hein) Hughes, 84, passed away peacefully on December 30, 2025, surrounded by her family.

She was born on January 20, 1941, in Tell City, Indiana and graduated from Tell City High School in 1959. She went on to receive her Master of Nursing degree from the University of Evansville.

Nancy lived a life filled with love, laughter, and generosity. She was a devoted nurse and nursing professor for nearly 50 years providing care to countless precious patients in hospitals in Tell City, Evansville, and Indianapolis, Indiana and in Ann Arbor and Saline, Michigan. Nancy inspired students with her passion for the profession by teaching in Evansville and finally retiring from Marian University in Indianapolis.

She adored bird watching, quilting, reading, gardening, and, mostly, spending time with her family. She was a tireless advocate and volunteer for several organizations in and around Franklin, IN, where she resided, for many years.

Nancy is survived by her devoted daughter, Jessica Hughes (Greg Johns); her beloved grandson, Corey (Makayla and Bentley) Turner, and sisters Mary (Bruce) Faulkenberg and Susan Hein. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Mildred (LeClere) Hein; infant son, William; sister, Dr. Elizabeth Farley and her brothers, George Chuck Hein, and Daniel Farley.

Friends in central Indiana are welcome to celebrate Nancy's vibrant life at an informal gathering at Coffeehouse Five, located at 41 Monroe Street in Franklin, IN 46131, on Sunday, February 1, 2026, from 1:00 until 3:00 PM.

Nancy’s wishes were to be laid to rest in St. Mary Cemetery, in her hometown of Tell City. A memorial service will be held there later this spring.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Johnson County (IN) Public Library Foundation, Johnson Memorial Hospital Guild (Scholarship Fund), Marian University Leighton School of Nursing (Scholarship Fund), St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church (Franklin), or The Nature Conservancy of Indiana.

Huber Funeral Home, Tell City Chapel, is assisting the family with Nancy’s wishes.
