Ruth Thomas

Rome, Indiana - Ruth J. Thomas, 92, passed away on Saturday, September 6, 2014, at Golden Living Center Lincoln Hills. She was born in Rome, Indiana, on March 21, 1922. Her parents were the late Wilbur Gruver and Effie (Brown) Gruver Groves. Also preceding her in death were her husband, Alfred Thomas, a son, Arnold Thomas and eight brothers and sisters. A 1939 graduate of Cannelton High School, Ruth was a member of Rome United Methodist Church and enjoyed playing cards with her friends and neighbors, quilting and sewing. Surviving are her daughters, Darlene Etienne (Hubert), of Washington, Lilith Reeves, of Speedway, Juanda Hoskins (Stanley), of Bargersville and Karen Waninger (Mark) of Jamestown; a son, Robert Thomas of Rome; daughter-in-law, Leslie Thomas, Washington, West Virginia; seven grandchildren, Teri Dunlavy, Brett Etienne, Leigh Latshaw, Michael Reeves, Julie Porep, Brad Waninger and David Waninger. Ruth had seven great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM CDT on Tuesday, September 9, 2014, at Huber Funeral Home, Cannelton Chapel, with burial in Lower Cummings Cemetery near Derby. Rev. Ann Skiba and Rev. Karen Davaisher will officiate. Visitation will be from 3:00 until 8:00 PM on Monday and from 9:00 AM until service time on Tuesday. Memorial contributions may be made to Rome United Methodist Church.
