Retired Chief Warrant Office 3, Vernon Jackson Mitchell, passed away peacefully on November 29, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, family, and cherished memories.
He was born in Hardinsburg, Kentucky, a son of Curtis Lee and Lelia Pearl (Bryant) Mitchell.
After twenty-three years of service, Vernon retired as a maintenance technician from the United States Army. He enjoyed playing pool and cards, especially euchre and uno. Family was the cornerstone of Vernon’s life. He delighted in gatherings, stories, and the laughter of younger generations. His warmth and wisdom touched all who knew him, and his presence will be deeply missed.
Surviving are his sons, Vernon “Bud” Mitchell, Mark Mitchell; daughters, Marie Bennett (David) and Tamara Johnson and several grandchildren and great grandchildren who will carry forward his spirit and lessons that he instilled in them. After the passing of his wife, Vernon later found companionship and joy with his longtime partner, Margaret Franklin.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Curt and Lelia Mitchell; his wife, Joyce (Nugent) Mitchell; children, Debbie Clark, Bobbi Sabelhaus, Shannon Merritt and Toby Merritt; siblings, Virginia Lillpop, Doris Greive, Curt Mitchell, Jr. and Thelma Suter and his son-in-law, Michael Johnson.
A military graveside service will be held at 12:15 PM CST on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, at Greenwood Cemetery with visitation from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM at Huber Funeral Home, Tell City Chapel.
Vernon’s memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends, who will remember him for his resilience, kindness, humor and unwavering love.
